Good question. The watch refreshes its face once per second to save battery, so the pulse you see follows that beat. Your real heart rate is right next to it: the HR icon is wrapped by a ring that moves with your live heartbeat. One quick glance tells you whether you are at rest or your engine is running hot.

How does the steps and distance progress work?

You set your daily goal (5k to 15k steps, or 5 to 42 km) from Garmin Connect. The steps and distance icons act as a progress ring that fills as you move through the day.
